Windows Root Directory Files

 

This is a list of the files Windows 95 can put in the default root directory ( usually c:\ ), what they are and whether or not they can be safely deleted

AUTOEXEC.BAT Configuration Windows 95 runs the files in this script before the operating system is started. (Windows 95 has its own hidden script file that runs setup files/parameters that are missing from autoexec.bat) Only required to load real-mode drivers
BOOTLOG.PRV Previous startup log Record of previous Windows 95 startup (boot) process. A requested logged boot (or Windows 95 automatic request), renames BOOTLOG.TXT to BOOTLOG.PRV before new BOOTLOG.TXT file is created Can be deleted
BOOTLOG.TXT Startup log Record of Windows 95 startup (boot) process. Created if manual logged boot is requested and automatically by Windows 95 if previous boot was unsuccessful Can be deleted
COMMAND.COM Command line processor Windows 95 command line processor Do NOT delete
CONFIG.SYS Configuration Used to load real-mode (16-bit) drivers into memory before the autoexec.bat script file is run and before the operating system is started. (Windows 95 has its own hidden system configuration file that runs setup files/parameters that are missing from config.sys) Only required to load real-mode drivers
DETLOG.OLD Previous detection log Record of previous Windows 95 hardware detection process. Previous DETLOG.TXT file is renamed DETLOG.OLD before new DETLOG.TXT file is created Can be deleted
DETLOG.TXT Detection log Record of progress of Windows 95 hardware detection process. Created during hardware detection and referred to by hardware detection recovery process if previous attempt to detect hardware caused a problem Can be deleted

SETUPLOG.TXT Setup log Created by Windows 95 setup to record progress of the installation procedure. Referred to by Windows 95 setup during an installation recovery Can be deleted
SUHDLOG.DAT Setup hard disk log Created during an 'upgrade' and contains copies of all Master Boot Records and Partition Boot Records on the system before and after upgrade to Windows 95. Used by Windows 95 uninstall to restore the hard disk master boot sector during an uninstall process 'Old Windows 3.x and MS-DOS system files' in Add/Remove Programs will remove
SYSTEM.1ST 1st Registry Copy of original registry created by Windows 95 setup Recommend keeping, to restore registry if damaged
W95UNDO.DAT Uninstall data Compressed backup of Windows 3.x files replaced as part of the Windows 95 setup process. Used by Windows 95 uninstall process 'Old Windows 3.x and MS-DOS system files' in Add/Remove Programs will remove
W95UNDO.INI Uninstall script List of files backed up in W95UNDO.DAT file. Created by Windows 95 setup and used as part of the Windows 95 uninstall process 'Old Windows 3.x and MS-DOS system files' in Add/Remove Programs will remove
